President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that road contractors who halted work on key infrastructure projects across the country will soon return to their sites to complete the jobs.
Speaking at Jackson Park in Koforidua on Sunday, July 20, as part of his Eastern Regional Thank You Tour, President Mahama revealed that an audit commissioned by his government into road contracts has now been completed, clearing the path for stalled works to resume.
“We heard the cries of the people—bad roads were among the top concerns everywhere we went,” he noted. “But when we assumed office, we paused many of the projects after discovering irregularities. Some contractors had received double payments with no work done. So, we asked the Auditor-General to step in. We are going to allow the contractors go back to the site except those who took double payments.”
The audit findings, according to the President, confirm that while some contractors were in the clear and will be allowed to continue work, others who took payments from both the Road Fund and the Ministry of Finance without executing their projects will face consequences.
President Mahama reiterated that revamping critical infrastructure remains a key pillar of his administration’s Big Push Agenda and assured that only contractors with clean records will be allowed back on site.
