Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has strongly condemned the recent assault on a nurse at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge), stressing that no individual has the right to attack health professionals, regardless of provocation.
The incident, which reportedly stemmed from delays in treating a critically injured patient, escalated into verbal abuse and physical aggression toward a nurse, forcing hospital management to involve the Ghana Police Service to restore order.
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, August 21, Minister Akandoh emphasized the need to protect healthcare workers, stating, irrespective of the level of provocation at any health facility in this country, nobody, irrespective of your status in society, absolutely nobody has the right to attack any health professional in this country. That is the gravity of the issue. That is what we must concentrate on, to send a clear signal that our health professionals working at the various health facilities are safe.”
He further noted that the Ministry of Health is reviewing security protocols across hospitals to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The ministry confirmed that arrests have been made in connection with the attack and announced the formation of a special committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the event.
Minister Akandoh concluded by urging the public to respect healthcare workers and ensure that hospitals remain safe spaces for both patients and staff.
