The government has approved the release of GH₵11.6 million to pay months of outstanding salaries owed to workers of the Ghana Railway Development Authority, following weeks of agitation by staff over delayed payments.
This was revealed by the Dr. Frederick Appoh, the Chief Executive Officer of GRDA in an interview.
According to him, the intervention will cover up to seven months of arrears after internal reviews exposed gaps in the payroll structure. “We have received GH₵21.5 million, but the Ministry was going through the reconciliation process,” he said.
He explained that part of the internally generated funds was used to settle obligations to contractors, affecting the total available for salary payments.
Dr. Appoh confirmed the latest funding approval and its intended purpose. “I am happy to announce that yesterday, the Ministry of Finance signed the release of GH₵11.6 million… It has been sent to the Ministry of Transport to pay our brothers and sisters,” he stated.
He added that discussions will continue with labour unions and government institutions to develop a sustainable solution to prevent future arrears.
