The Railway Workers Union has commended President John Dramani Mahama and other stakeholders after the government cleared 20 months of outstanding salary arrears owed its members.

The arrears covered the period from October 2024 to May 2026. The union said the government initially paid eight months before settling the remaining 12 months on August 24, 2026.

Speaking to the media, a representative of the union expressed appreciation to Mahama, the Vice President, Chief of Staff, Finance Minister, Transport Ministry, Labour Commission, Ghana Railway Development Authority and other stakeholders who contributed to resolving the issue.

“We are grateful and we show our great gratitude to him and all stakeholders who helped us get this far,” the representative said.

The union described the payment as a major relief for workers, particularly amid the challenges facing Ghana’s railway sector.

“It is not easy. We all accept that the railway sector is down. We only have 135 kilometers nationwide and it’s not easy for our father, our poppy, the president, to accept and act on our requests within a short possible time,” the representative said.

The union said the government’s decision to clear the outstanding 20 months of salary arrears had brought an end to a prolonged financial challenge for its members.

“We have only two people and the salary arrears was from October 2024 to May 2026. It was 20 months salary arrears and we thank God that as of the 24th of August all the salary arrears have been settled,” the representative said.

The union further thanked the government and other stakeholders for responding to its concerns and described the settlement as a demonstration of their commitment to the welfare of railway workers.

“We don’t know, we can’t even use any word or many words to thank him but what we are saying is that God really blesses his excellency for listening to us,” the representative said.

The union expressed hope that the government would continue to engage workers and address outstanding concerns affecting the railway sector.
