The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has sent reinforcement teams and armoured vehicles to Nalerigu and surrounding communities in Ghana’s North East Region following unrest that saw two houses set on fire.
The deployment is part of efforts to restore peace, protect lives, and enforce a government-imposed curfew.
The disturbances reportedly began when some youth in the regional capital, Nalerigu, set ablaze two residential buildings and threatened to target more homes and residents.
In response, the Interior Ministry has imposed a curfew on Nalerigu and its environs, effective from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. starting Thursday, December 18, 2025.
Police say the reinforcement teams will not only restore calm in the affected areas but also support the North East Regional Police Command in securing major highways and protecting commuters.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Robert Anabiik Anmain, Head of the Public Affairs Unit for the North East Region, reassured residents that investigations into the incidents are ongoing.
“Those responsible for the attacks and burning of the houses will be arrested and brought to justice,” he said.
Authorities are urging community leaders, youth, and residents to remain calm, cooperate with security forces, and resolve conflicts through non-violent means.
