The Ghana Police arrested a commercial bus driver and his assistant after discovering more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition hidden among passengers’ luggage on a route from Accra to northern Ghana.

The vehicle, a Kia Grand Bird bus with registration number AK 1309–21, was stopped on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, around 7:00 pm at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier in the Ashanti Region during a routine inspection.

The bus was en route to Savelugu via Tamale and had 45 passengers on board at the time.

Officers on duty became suspicious during the check and, following instructions from the Divisional Commander, conducted a detailed search of the bus.

They found a fertiliser sack containing 1,050 rounds of AAA and BB cartridge ammunition concealed among passenger luggage.

The driver, Mohammed Gzali, 42, and his assistant, Mohammed Jabir, 22, were taken into police custody. Preliminary statements suggest the sack had been handed to the driver at a terminal by an unidentified person, with instructions to deliver it to someone known only as “Oboye” in Tamale.

The bus has been impounded, and the ammunition is being held as evidence while investigations continue to determine the source and intended recipient of the explosives.

Police have assured the public that they are intensifying efforts to trace the origin of the ammunition and will provide updates as the investigation unfolds.
