The government has released a total of GH¢809 million to the contractor working on the Pokuase–Nsawam Highway, ensuring the resumption of repair works on the busy stretch.
The payment comes as contractors returned to site after weeks of inactivity, bringing relief to commuters who had endured heavy traffic congestion due to the road’s poor state.
The disclosure also follows recent threats by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other transport operators to embark on a nationwide strike if contractors were not allowed back to work.
Controller and Accountant General, Kwasi Agyei, confirmed the payments in an interview on Peace FM on Monday, August 18, 2025.
He explained that the government made the payments in three tranches — on July 24, July 30, and August 4 — to fully settle its financial obligations.
“On July 24, we gave part payment; on July 30, another tranche; and on August 4, the final payment. Altogether, we have honoured the request in full, amounting to about GH¢809 million,” he said.
Reports indicate that work has now resumed, though transport unions are expected to issue a final decision on their intended strike in the coming days.
