Parliament has suspended sitting over the demise of the Akwatia Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi today, Monday, July 7, 2025
The legislator reportedly died in the early hours of Monday after suffering an alleged heart attack.
His unexpected passing sent shockwaves through the House, leaving MPs in visible distress, with many seen shedding tears as proceedings were suspended.
The somber announcement was made on the floor by Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, who, with a heavy heart, formally broke the news to colleagues.
The atmosphere in the chamber quickly turned emotional, as MPs, visibly shaken, embraced one another and bowed their heads in grief. Some openly wept at their desks.
Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, also visibly distressed, agreed to the request for adjournment, expressing deep shock over the sudden demise of the young MP, who was seen actively participating in parliamentary business just last week.
Mr. Kumi’s death comes amid a cloud of legal controversy. In the meantime, Parliament and the nation are left mourning the loss of a young legislator whose time in office was marked by both controversy and dedication to his constituency.
