A bipartisan investigation into how the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) handled the investigation into the money stash discovered in the home of former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah has been requested by a number of well-known Ghanaians, including the former Auditor-General, Daniel Yaw Domelevo.
The group, which also includes prominent anti-graft activist Martin Kpebu, security analyst Dr. Adam Bona, political science professor Ransford Gyampo, and more than a hundred other Ghanaians from various backgrounds, contends that EOCO had more than enough reason to look into the former Minister for money laundering because of her inconsistent behavior and her inability to identify the source of the sizable sum of money that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) seized from her home.
“The failure to explain the source of the money should have been the cornerstone of the investigation,” the petition which was submitted to Parliament on Thursday May 16, 2024, noted among others.
It also sparked worries about what the organization claimed was EOCO’s deliberate unwillingness to take action to safeguard the funds that the OSP had taken from the former minister’s home. “Upon receipt of the docket, EOCO did not act timeously to seize the money that the OSP was returning to Madam Cecelia Dapaa as publicly stated by the OSP”.
In addition, the petition claimed that EOCO’s public remarks and investigative measures had been contradictory.
Following the impasse between state anti-corruption organizations looking into the former Minister over the money hoard, this development has occurred.
