The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called on the Executive to release land near the State House for the development of a permanent Parliamentary complex, describing the current arrangement as limiting for an independent Legislature.
Speaking at the launch of Parliament’s 2026–2030 Corporate Strategic Plan on Thursday, Bagbin highlighted infrastructural challenges that hinder parliamentary efficiency, including restricted access to some State House facilities.
“We have been crying, and I hope you will support us so that at least we should be liberated from being tenants of the State House to our own premises as an arm of government,” he said, adding that efforts to modernise existing facilities have not resolved these constraints.
Bagbin also revealed that Parliament is piloting an electronic voting system to improve decision-making in the House. He stressed that a permanent Parliamentary complex would strengthen the operational independence of the Legislature and safeguard Ghana’s democracy.
Previous attempts to construct a new Parliamentary chamber under the 2019 NPP government were halted after opposition from the Minority and civil society groups, including the widely publicised #DropTheChamber protest.
