Parliament has approved a concession agreement for the construction of the Accra–Kumasi Expressway, with the Ministry of Roads and Highways as the Contracting Authority and Accra–Kumasi Expressway Limited appointed as the concessionaire.
The new six-lane dual carriageway is designed to provide a safer, faster, and more efficient alternative for commuters along the heavily trafficked Accra–Kumasi corridor, without replacing the existing highway.
Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Agbodza, assured Parliament that travelers would still have the option of using the current route.
“There’s no road in Ghana that is more important than the road between Accra and Kumasi. And indeed we are doing something that we’ll be proud of maybe in five years,” he said.
Lawmakers raised concerns about neglecting the current highway, which suffers from potholes, poor lighting, and uneven surfaces.
The project, partly funded through the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), is expected to modernize one of Ghana’s key transport corridors while significantly reducing travel time and enhancing road safety.
