Former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has been released from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention following a judicial order, as legal proceedings surrounding him continue both in the United States and Ghana.
In a statement issued by his lawyers, Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline & Partners, they confirmed that his release took place on April 7, 2026.
“On April 7th 2026, Ken Ofori-Atta was released from ICE detention pursuant to judicial order. He is home with his family,” the statement said.
The legal team added that he intends to rely on due process to defend his rights.
“Mr. Ofori-Atta remains fully committed to use due process in defense of his rights as guaranteed under the constitution and laws of the United States,” the statement noted.
They also expressed gratitude for public support during his period of detention.
“He and his family remain thankful to God and all those who have offered prayers and support during this period,” the lawyers added.
His release comes amid mounting legal pressure linked to corruption-related allegations in Ghana. He is among several individuals named in investigations tied to financial transactions during his tenure as Finance Minister.
Authorities have initiated processes, including extradition efforts, to bring him back to face trial over alleged financial irregularities and procurement-related concerns.
The case forms part of a broader anti-corruption push that has seen several high-profile scandals in recent years.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ofori-Atta is expected to continue his legal defense as investigations and legal proceedings progress in both jurisdictions.
