The Obuasi Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) has ordered the immediate closure of Obuasi Senior High Technical School in the Ashanti Region following a violent student riot that left the headmaster seriously injured and resulted in extensive damage to school property.
Six students have so far been arrested in connection with the attack, which reportedly occurred after rumours circulated among students that the headmaster, Abdullai Zakaria, had secretly buried an infant on the school premises.
The headmaster sustained severe head injuries after some students allegedly attacked him with cutlasses.
He was initially rushed to the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital in Obuasi before being transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi for advanced medical treatment.
Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and Chairperson of MUSEC, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, announced the school’s closure after an emergency security meeting held on the campus.
She said authorities were conducting a mandatory roll call before releasing students to their homes to allow security agencies to undertake a full investigation into the incident.
The riot also led to widespread vandalism on the school compound, with several school facilities damaged and the headmaster’s private vehicle destroyed.
Following the unrest, a heavy police presence has been deployed to the school to restore calm and secure the premises.
Academic activities have been suspended indefinitely.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has commenced investigations into the assault, the destruction of property, and the allegations surrounding the reported burial of an infant, which triggered the violent incident.
