Ghana is set to construct a 1,200-megawatt (MW) state-owned power plant as part of efforts to provide reliable and affordable electricity to consumers across the country.
The announcement was made by the Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson at the Future of Energy Conference held in Accra
According to him, there is the need for a dependable and cost-effective power supply was highlighted as critical to Ghana’s economic development.
He said the planned power plant is expected to strengthen the country’s electricity generation capacity and contribute to improved reliability in the national power system.
He maintained that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to address challenges in the energy sector while ensuring that households, businesses and industries have access to stable and affordable electricity.
”The state ownership of the facility is also expected to give government greater strategic control over power generation and support efforts to improve the long-term sustainability of Ghana’s energy sector, he said.
