NPP Primaries: Aspirants sign peace pact, pledge respect and support for winner

All five New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirants have signed a peace pact committing to party unity, respect for the electoral process, and support for the eventual winner ahead of the party’s primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.

The aspirants who endorsed the agreement are former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Abetifi MP and former Agriculture Minister Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong and former General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong.

Speaking during the signing of the pact on Thursday, January 22, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin highlighted the disadvantages of being in opposition and urged the aspirants to prioritize unity and discipline.

“I say that opposition is painful and lonely. We know this. Good friends don’t pick up calls. They ignore us and they find new friends. We are living it. We feel it every day and surely none of us wants to remain there,” he said.

He also urged the aspirants to rise above personal grievances and short-term emotions for the long-term benefit of the party.

“Let us therefore rise above anger. Let us rise above insults. Let us rise above short term emotions for long term victory. Let us protect the party that has given us voice, purpose and hope. And when the contest is over, let us close ranks, lock arms and march forward together, stronger, wiser and united towards victory 2028. Our future depends on it. Our party depends on it. And Ghana is counting on us,” Afenyo-Markin added.

He described internal elections as a test of the party’s institutional strength and discipline, emphasizing that peace must be deliberately pursued.

The NPP’s National Executive Committee and National Council approved the January 31 date to provide sufficient time for aspirants to campaign and for internal coordination ahead of the 2028 general elections.
