The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has renewed its commitment to strict regulatory compliance and safety in Ghana’s petroleum downstream sector as the country marks ten years since the tragic June 3, 2015 disaster at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

The catastrophic event, which resulted in the deaths of 154 people and left many more with life-altering injuries, remains one of Ghana’s most painful national tragedies.

In a statement, the NPA expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and property and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.

The Authority reaffirmed that the memory of this disaster continues to guide its mandate to ensure safety and prevent fuel-related accidents.

Since the incident, the NPA has implemented a series of reforms to improve the safety of petroleum operations across the country.

These include strengthened collaboration with other regulatory agencies in the siting and monitoring of fuel stations, the enforcement of enhanced safety protocols for Petroleum Service Providers, and intensified nationwide public education on fuel station safety.

As the rainy season approaches, the NPA is urging residents living near drainage systems and fuel stations to take extra precautions.

The Authority emphasized that public vigilance, coupled with robust regulation, is essential to preventing similar tragedies.

The statement further noted that the June 3 disaster serves as a powerful reminder of the need for ongoing safety awareness and proactive enforcement in the sector.

The NPA assured Ghanaians that it remains committed to its regulatory responsibilities and will continue working to ensure that the country’s fuel industry operates under the highest safety standards.
