Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has firmly stated that no military personnel have been deployed to polling stations for today’s parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
In a Facebook post on Friday, July 11, 2025, the Minister stressed that security for the election is solely being handled by the Ghana Police Service.
“To ensure a peaceful and democratic process, the Ghana Police Service will be fully in charge of security for today’s elections in Ablekuma North Constituency. THERE WILL BE NO MILITARY DEPLOYMENT!” Dr. Boamah wrote.
He further cautioned against the recurrence of past electoral violence, referencing the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election and the deaths recorded during the 2020 elections.
The Minister called for citizen safety and trust in the police to maintain order.
“The Ghana Police Service is trained to handle electoral security, and we trust them to do their job. Let’s keep the peace and make our voices heard as John Dramani Mahama resets Ghana and creates more opportunities for Ghanaians,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has outlined extensive security arrangements to ensure peace during the rerun taking place across 19 polling stations in the constituency.
In a statement issued Thursday, July 10, the Accra Regional Police Command assured the public of its readiness, indicating that officers will be deployed to all designated polling stations and will monitor vehicular and pedestrian activity in surrounding areas.
The Police appealed to the public to cooperate fully with security personnel, follow electoral regulations, and help maintain a peaceful environment throughout the exercise.
The Electoral Commission is conducting the rerun to resolve issues stemming from the December 2024 general elections, where results in 19 out of 37 polling stations could not be properly verified.
Results from the other 18 stations had already been certified.
The Ablekuma North Constituency has remained without a Member of Parliament since the 2024 elections due to the unresolved collation.
The EC maintains that today’s rerun is critical to finalizing the election process and restoring parliamentary representation to the area.
