The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has announced that over 41,000 students have registered under the “No Fees Stress” policy by the John Dramani Mahama- led government.
The “No Fees Stress” initiative, launched by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, allows newly admitted students to register for financial support through the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF).
The initiative forms part of the Mahama-led administration’s broader agenda to remove cost barriers to higher education.
The SLTF, which is overseeing the programme, affirmed its readiness to begin the reimbursement process by June 2025.
According to the fund, the data collected will be carefully verified against admission records from public tertiary institutions to ensure the legitimacy of claims.
This update comes on the back of a campaign promise fulfilled by President John Dramani Mahama, who recently disclosed that the initiative will cover the fees of 156,294 students at an estimated cost of GH₵452.9 million.
The registration portal, launched on April 29, continues to receive traffic from students seeking to benefit from the policy.
The Minister in a Facebook post, noted that a total of 57,327 students have so far accessed the registration portal created for the programme.
Out of this number, 41,647 students have successfully completed the registration process.
He explained that the registration is crucial, as it enables the government to collect banking information of students who have already paid their fees, to ensure they are reimbursed accordingly.
It also serves to validate data submitted by the public tertiary institutions, ensuring that disbursement is accurate and transparent.
In a related development, the Deputy Education Minister, Dr. Clement Apaak, has explained that first-year university students who have already paid their academic fees will not receive direct refunds.
According to him, these payments would be credited toward the student’s second-year tuition fees.
