The National Identification Authority (NIA) under the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) has declared an indefinite strike, effective today, Tuesday, June 24, 2025, over unmet demands.
This follows a resolution by the Union’s Divisional Executive Council and the failure of a final round of talks with the Ministry of Finance held on June 23, 2025, to yield any concrete commitments regarding the payment of the NIA’s Operational Support Allowance.
In a statement dated Monday, June 23, the Union explained that the allowance was the product of extensive negotiations concluded in July 2024 between the government, represented by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the Ministry of Finance, and the Union.
They indicated that payments commenced in August 2024 but were abruptly halted in January 2025.
The Union expressed frustration over what it described as months of unfulfilled promises and a lack of clear timelines for resuming the payments, despite repeated engagements and assurances from NIA Management and key stakeholders.
A portion of the statement noted: “Following a resolution by the Divisional Executive Council of the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) – NIA, and after a final round of engagement with the Ministry of Finance on June 23, 2025, we write to formally inform you that the Union will embark on an indefinite strike action, effective Tuesday, June 24, 2025.”
The Union stressed that the strike is a last resort, expressing disappointment at the Ministry of Finance for failing to demonstrate seriousness in resolving the matter.
The PSWU has directed all members at the NIA to withdraw their services indefinitely until their demands are addressed.
The Union called for calm, urging members to remain peaceful and law-abiding throughout the strike period.
Meanwhile, the Union has expressed willingness to resume dialogue, provided discussions lead to the prompt and full payment of the agreed allowances.
