The National Identification Authority (NIA) has suspended the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) access to its Identity Verification System Platform (IVSP), citing an outstanding debt of GH¢376.7 million.
In a letter dated July 29, 2025, the NIA informed the GRA that the suspension would take effect from Friday, August 1, following months of failed attempts to recover the owed amount.
The NIA noted that it had issued multiple reminders, including a final demand notice on April 29 and a follow-up warning on July 15, but received no response or effort toward repayment.
According to the NIA, GRA’s failure to settle its obligations is not only a breach of agreement but is also crippling the operations of the NIA and threatening the sustainability of the National Identification System on which several state institutions rely.
“This action has been necessitated by GRA’s failure and/or refusal to make good its indebtedness to NIA for its use of the said IVSP notwithstanding prior notice and ample opportunity for settlement and that the GRA has failed, neglected and/or refused to respond to NIA’s letter dated 15th July 2025 or take steps to address the concerns raised in the said letter to date,” stated Acting Executive Secretary of the NIA, Wisdom Kwaku Deku.
“It is important to note that GRA’s persistent failure to honour its obligations is seriously crippling the operations of the NIA, threatening the sustainability of the National Identification System upon which GRA and many others depend.”
The NIA clarified that services would only resume once the GRA fully settles its debt and addresses all concerns raised in previous correspondences.
