The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has disbursed GH¢267.67 million to health facilities across Ghana, marking another major step in efforts to stabilize the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and improve healthcare delivery.
This latest payment covers vetted claims submitted up to April 2025. It pushes the total amount paid by the Authority in the last seven months to over GH¢1.5 billion.
NHIA, in a statement dated Tuesday, July 8, noted that the disbursement reflects its continued commitment to timely reimbursements and the sustainability of the health insurance scheme, which serves over 17 million Ghanaians.
The Authority said its new prompt payment regime—rolled out earlier this year—has helped maintain a debt-free status so far in 2025 and has eased the financial burden on healthcare providers.
The NHIA also emphasized that the payment aligns with its mandate to fund treatment for illnesses covered under the NHIS Benefit Package, which addresses more than 95% of disease conditions nationwide.
The scheme is supported by an extensive medicines list of over 550 essential drugs.
The Authority called on all healthcare facilities to channel the funds into improved service delivery, especially in the face of rising public health concerns, including recent outbreaks of COVID-19 and H1N1 in parts of the country.
It added that further payments are expected by August, underscoring the NHIA’s focus on transparency, accountability, and support for Ghana’s universal health coverage goals.
