Ghana’s reparatory justice push gaining global support after UN resolution – Ablakwa

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says Ghana’s reparatory justice campaign has gained international support following the adoption of a Ghana-led United Nations resolution on the transatlantic enslavement of Africans.

Speaking ahead of President John Dramani Mahama’s engagements at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Ablakwa said the resolution, adopted on March 25, 2026, has helped strengthen global cooperation on reparatory justice.

“You will recall that in March this year, specifically on the 25th of March, history was made when the United Nations member states voted overwhelmingly to endorse the Ghana-led resolution which declared the transatlantic enslavement as the gravest crime against humanity,” he said.

According to Ablakwa, President Mahama subsequently convened the Next Steps Conference in Accra, which secured commitments towards advancing the reparatory justice agenda.

He said the Netherlands and Germany have pledged to return more than 2,000 artifacts looted from Ghana, while Denmark has committed resources towards restoring Ghana’s castles and forts.

“Denmark has pledged resources to restore our castles and forts, and that is significant because it will help in remembrance, in truth-telling, and in making sure that humanity never again repeats that dark era of our history,” he said.

Ablakwa also cited developments in France following the UN resolution, saying the country had repealed what he described as its “CONOA” law and communicated with Ghana.

He said the developments demonstrate growing international engagement with Ghana’s reparatory justice agenda.
