Former National Petroleum Authority (NPA) CEO, Dr. Mustapha Abdul Hamid, has filed a GH¢20 million defamation suit against the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), challenging claims that linked him to the alleged embezzlement of GH¢1.3 billion from the Unified Petroleum Price Fund (UPPF).
The writ, lodged at the Accra High Court (General Jurisdiction Division) on November 10, 2025, seeks a declaration that the OSP’s statement during a February 12, 2025 media briefing was defamatory and damaged Dr. Hamid’s reputation.
He is demanding GH¢20 million in damages, a public apology, a retraction of the statement, and a perpetual injunction preventing further defamatory remarks.
According to the suit, the OSP had named Dr. Hamid among four individuals under investigation for alleged corruption involving the UPPF, but he asserts he was never informed of any probe prior to the public announcement and denies any wrongdoing.
He described the OSP’s claims as “false, malicious, and unjustified,” adding that subsequent developments have shown no embezzlement occurred.
Dr. Hamid also claims the public statement caused him severe embarrassment, psychological distress, and professional setbacks, including the withdrawal of consultancy and academic offers abroad.
His lawyers noted that a letter requesting a retraction and apology, sent on February 17, 2025, was met instead with a summons for questioning on February 19, 2025.
