Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku says Ghana is set to strengthen its poultry industry with the establishment of a new poultry processing factory in Bechem.
The facility is part of the government’s broader strategy to achieve self-sufficiency in poultry production by 2029.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at the Presidency on Monday, November 24, Mr. Opoku explained that the factory will support the country’s ongoing Nkoko Nketenkete Poultry Programme, which has already distributed 720,000 day-old birds to 13,000 farmers across twelve districts.
“This targeted intervention seeks to uplift vulnerable communities, particularly women-headed households, by enabling them to contribute meaningfully to local food production while improving nutrition and income security at the grassroots level,” he noted.
According to him, the Bechem poultry processing factory, whose procurement process has been completed, will serve as a key hub for processing the anticipated increase in domestic poultry production.
A sod-cutting ceremony for the facility is scheduled for Thursday, November 27, 2025, and will be performed by President John Dramani Mahama.
Mr. Opoku emphasized that with the factory in place, coupled with the ongoing Nkoko Nketenkete programme, Ghana is poised to expand local poultry production significantly, reduce imports, and create sustainable livelihoods for farmers across the country.
The initiative forms part of the government’s long-term plan to ensure food security and self-sufficiency in the poultry subsector, while also providing economic opportunities for communities in the selected districts.
