The University of Ghana is poised to significantly expand its student accommodation with a new 10,000-bed hostel, following a major agreement inked in Singapore during President John Dramani Mahama’s recent state visit.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) forms part of a series of strategic partnerships aimed at boosting infrastructure and economic collaboration between Ghana and Asia.
The visit, hosted by Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, also saw deals signed between Rock Africa, Robin Village Development, the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), and Uni Premier for innovative prefabricated housing solutions.
Other agreements included collaborations on oil jetty construction, advanced airport security systems, and road and pavement development projects.
President Mahama emphasized that the engagements were not just about diplomacy but about fostering sustainable trade and investment, with tangible benefits for Ghana’s economy.
To strengthen bilateral ties further, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced that Ghana will establish a consulate in Singapore and encouraged Singapore to open a reciprocal mission in Accra.
The 10,000-bed hostel project will alleviate accommodation pressures at the University of Ghana, creating modern, scalable living spaces for students and setting a precedent for future infrastructure development across the country.
