President John Mahama has officially nominated Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie to serve as the next Chief Justice of Ghana.
The nomination, announced on Tuesday, September 23, has been submitted to the Council of State for advice before going to Parliament for vetting and approval.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, the most senior judge on the Supreme Court, has been acting as Chief Justice since April 2025 following the suspension and eventual removal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo for stated misbehavior.
His nomination comes at a crucial time for the judiciary, which faces the challenge of restoring public confidence after recent controversies.
Appointed to the Supreme Court in 2008 by former President John Agyekum Kufuor, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has served across all levels of the judiciary, from the Circuit Court to the Appeals Court.
His decades of service and seniority make him a leading figure to assume the top judicial role.
The Council of State is expected to give its advice in the coming days, after which Parliament will decide on his confirmation.
