Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno is expected to remain in office for the next two years following a fresh approval from President John Dramani Mahama, acting on the recommendation of the Police Council.
In a letter on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, the Presidency confirmed that the IGP will continue in his role beyond his statutory retirement, which he reaches in December 2025. His renewed mandate officially begins on December 28, 2025.
The re-engagement, signed by Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, emphasized that the Police Council is convinced Yohuno’s leadership remains crucial at a time when the Service is undergoing significant reforms.
The communication was copied to the Vice President, Chief of Staff, and the Minister for the Interior.
According to the letter, the decision was informed by “the Council’s firm conviction that your continued leadership is essential to sustaining ongoing reforms, strengthening operational effectiveness, and ensuring stability within the Ghana Police Service at this critical period.”
The IGP has been asked to formally confirm acceptance of the extended appointment within three days of receiving the notice.
