President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on violence against teachers, warning that assaults on educators will be treated as criminal acts and dealt with firmly under the law.
The President’s remarks follow a recent incident at Kade Senior High School in the Eastern Region, where some students allegedly assaulted a mathematics teacher over claims he allowed examination malpractice.
Speaking at the 7th Quadrennial and 54th Annual Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), President Mahama expressed disappointment that the case was reportedly settled informally after parents intervened at the police station.
Describing the situation as unacceptable, he said, “This is assault; it is criminal,” adding that merely paying compensation to resolve such cases only encourages similar behaviour.
He stressed that students involved in such acts should be taken through the legal process to ensure accountability, stating that offenders must be dealt with in a manner that convinces the public that “justice has been done.”
President Mahama assured teachers of his full backing, declaring, “As for assaults on teachers, I am with you 100 percent. We will deal with it.”
