President John Dramani Mahama has credited Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa for much of Ghana’s recent diplomatic successes, describing him as one of the hardest-working members of his administration.
Speaking during his Resetting Ghana Tour of the Volta Region on Thursday, July 16, the President praised the North Tongu MP for his efforts in advancing Ghana’s interests on the international stage and strengthening the country’s diplomatic relations.
According to President Mahama, many of the international achievements associated with his administration have been driven by the behind-the-scenes work of the Foreign Affairs Minister.
“Every credit that I have attained on the international scene, it is he [Okudzeto Ablakwa] who has done the leg work,” President Mahama said.
The President singled out Ghana’s role in championing the United Nations resolution on reparations, revealing that Mr. Ablakwa undertook extensive diplomatic engagements to secure support for the initiative.
Mr. Mahama disclosed that the Foreign Minister travelled widely and engaged member states across the world, helping Ghana secure the backing of 123 countries for the landmark resolution.
The President also commended Mr. Ablakwa for his role in facilitating the safe return of Ghanaians who were attacked and displaced during recent unrest in South Africa.
“The repatriation of our citizens from South Africa who were beaten and chased out; it was he [Okudzeto Ablakwa] who did the leg work to ensure their safe return home,”* President Mahama stated.
He said the minister’s commitment and dedication to duty had contributed significantly to the successes recorded by his administration in foreign affairs and international diplomacy.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who serves as Member of Parliament for North Tongu and Minister for Foreign Affairs, has in recent months led a number of diplomatic initiatives, including efforts to promote Ghana’s reparations agenda and strengthen relations with countries across Africa and beyond.
