Former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has been referred from the 37 Military Hospital to Bank Hospital in Accra for specialist treatment after medical examinations reportedly revealed bullet pellets and shattered glass fragments lodged close to her brain.
The former legislator sustained injuries during a shooting incident on June 21 at a residence linked to her younger brother, Israel Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Akofena, amid an ongoing family and leadership dispute within the Kristo Asafo Mission.
Speaking to journalists while receiving treatment, Ms Safo disclosed that doctors discovered fragments believed to be bullet pellets as well as pieces of shattered glass embedded in her head following detailed medical assessments.
According to her, specialists at the 37 Military Hospital recommended her transfer to Bank Hospital, where a team of medical experts is expected to undertake further procedures to remove the foreign objects and prevent potential complications.
The shooting incident has drawn significant public attention due to its connection to a succession dispute within the Kristo Asafo Mission following the death of its founder, Apostle Professor Kwadwo Safo.
Members of the Kwadwo Safo family have indicated that Ms Safo was at her brother’s residence in connection with efforts to serve a court injunction aimed at halting a planned installation ceremony reportedly intended to declare Israel Safo as leader of the church.
The family alleges that gunfire broke out during the encounter, resulting in injuries to Ms Safo and damage to her vehicle.
In her first public remarks after the incident, the former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection rejected allegations that she had arrived at the premises armed or with hostile intentions.
She maintained that she visited the residence as a family member and was not accompanied by any security personnel.
Ms Safo also dismissed claims that she rammed her vehicle into the property’s gate before the shooting occurred.
She challenged journalists and investigators to examine the vehicle, which is currently in police custody, insisting that the damage sustained was caused by gunfire rather than a collision.
Meanwhile, investigations into the incident are ongoing as police continue efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The case pending at Adenta Circuit Court has been adjourned to September 23
