President John Dramani Mahama has inspected progress of work on a meat processing factory under development in Bechem as part of the government’s efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in poultry production.
The facility, being developed by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, is designed to process 6,000 chickens per hour when completed.
During the inspection over the weekend, the President was briefed on the progress of construction, with the contractor indicating that the project had reached 50 per cent completion.
The contractor assured that work on the facility would be completed in March next year.
All equipment required for the factory have already been procured and are ready for installation once construction of the buildings is completed.
The project forms part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen Ghana’s poultry industry, reduce reliance on imported poultry products and boost local production.
The establishment of the facility is expected to provide processing capacity for locally produced poultry, helping to improve the value chain and support efforts to make domestic poultry production more competitive.
The government’s drive towards poultry self-sufficiency is aimed at creating opportunities for local poultry farmers, strengthening food security and reducing the country’s dependence on imports.
