The Concerned Nurses and Midwifery Association of Ghana has distanced itself from controversial comments made by Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum, General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), against Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.
Dr. Tenkorang-Twum recently suggested that the Health Minister lacked understanding of hospital systems because of his background as a farmer, sparking backlash from the public, especially young Ghanaians, who described his comments as disrespectful and repetitive attacks on the Minister.
In a strongly worded statement signed by its President, Abena Serwaa Akoto, and Secretary, Francis Asaba, the Concerned Nurses group said the remarks were “unbecoming and unprofessional” of a leader of Dr. Tenkorang-Twum’s stature.
“We, the Concerned Nurses and Midwifery Association of Ghana, wish to place on record our strong condemnation of the recent utterances made by the General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum.”
“While we continue to stand firmly with our fellow nurses and midwives in their legitimate concerns and struggles, we find the language and description he used in reference to the Honourable Minister of Health to be highly unacceptable and unbecoming of a leader of his stature. As a senior representative of the nursing profession, we believe Dr. Tenkorang-Twum should have exercised greater discretion, professionalism, and respect in his choice of words, regardless of any disagreement with government policy or actions,” the statement read.
The group urged nursing leaders nationwide to maintain professionalism in their public engagements, warning that intemperate language undermines the respect and credibility of the nursing and midwifery profession.
They further expressed hope that Dr. Tenkorang-Twum would exercise better judgment in future and focus on constructive advocacy to advance the welfare of nurses and midwives rather than diminishing the image of the profession.
