Reconstruction work on the La General Hospital is finally set to resume after months of inactivity, following the government’s approval of the second Interim Payment Certificate (IPC).
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, who inspected the project site this week, said the approval clears a major financial hurdle that had stalled the €50 million project for months.
He explained that the hospital’s funding does not come from a dedicated loan or grant, but rather from the national budget—making the release of funds dependent on government allocations.
“So in the 2025 budget, we made an allocation of 130 million Ghana CEDs for this project. My records indicate that out of the 50 million euros, about 7 million euros have been paid. Which means that we have about 43 million euros more to pay before the completion of this project,” he stated.
The Minister assured that the Ministry of Finance has committed to releasing the necessary funds to allow work to continue smoothly, adding that contractors have already returned to the site and are progressing pending payments.
Originally demolished in 2020 due to structural concerns, the La General Hospital has faced repeated delays, drawing frustration from residents who have been left without a major public healthcare facility for five years.
Mr. Akandoh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing the hospital within the next two years, emphasizing that he has taken a personal interest in ensuring the project is not derailed again.
