Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has urged the creation of a pan-African media powerhouse to unify the continent and tell Africa’s stories from an African perspective.
Addressing participants at the Broadcasting at the Crossroads forum in Accra on September 26, Kufuor emphasized that the continent is still largely defined by foreign media, which often distorts its image and hinders progress.
He proposed Accra as a potential hub for a media organization that could bridge linguistic and regional divides, fostering cultural exchange, economic collaboration, and continental integration.
“If the professional media people will find a way to establish a powerful media agency, say here in Accra—very African—to tell African stories, not just political, it could be economic, it could be social, it could be entertainment, it could be trade, it could be industry. I tell you, before you know it, the African in Nigeria, Nairobi, or South Africa—we would do better,” he said.
Kufuor also highlighted the challenges posed by colonial-era divisions, language barriers, and limited African control over digital platforms.
He argued that a homegrown media platform would empower Africans to shape their own narrative, strengthen unity, and showcase the continent’s potential to the world.
