Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has announced plans to conduct a mass burial of unclaimed bodies following severe congestion at its mortuary.
In a news release, the hospital disclosed that its mortuary is currently “at full capacity,” making it necessary to take urgent steps to manage the situation.
About 320 bodies, described as unclaimed, unknown, or unidentified, are expected to be included in the exercise.
Management is therefore appealing to relatives and next of kin of deceased persons whose bodies are at the mortuary to come forward and “make the necessary arrangements” before the deadline of January 18, 2026.
According to the hospital, any bodies that remain unclaimed after the deadline will be buried through a coordinated process with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in line with approved public health and administrative procedures.
The hospital says the decision, though difficult, is aimed at addressing the growing congestion and ensuring proper management of the facility while giving families ample time to claim their relatives.
