Several students of the Kadjebi-Asato Senior High School in the Oti Region collapsed on Tuesday morning after a fire gutted one of the boys’ dormitory rooms, sparking fear and chaos on campus.
The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 2, destroying an entire room in the dormitory block. The blaze consumed all belongings in the affected room and tore through the roofing structure, leaving the space completely ravaged.
Efforts to control the fire were hampered by logistical setbacks. Firefighters who responded to the emergency call were unable to utilise the district’s fire tender.
With no functional appliance available, personnel resorted to improvised methods to contain the flames, slowing their response and allowing the fire to spread rapidly.
The situation sparked panic among students, many of whom rushed to assist in evacuating valuables from nearby rooms.
School authorities, aided by community members, moved quickly to stabilise the affected students. All students who passed out were given immediate attention and have since been attended to.
