The Ghana Police Service has announced temporary road closures and traffic diversions in Accra as the nation prepares for the State Funeral of victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash.
The ceremony will be held at Independence Square on Friday, August 15, 2025.
In a statement issued on Thursday, August 14, the Police said the measures are necessary to ensure public safety and smooth traffic management during the solemn event.
Road closures
Roads that will be blocked include:
- 28th February Road (from CEPS Traffic Light to Castle Road Junction)
- Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on Lokko Street
- Castle Road (from AU Roundabout to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light)
- Starlet 91 Road at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection
Traffic diversions
Motorists from La, Labone, and Osu heading towards the Ministries will be redirected via Salem Avenue to Oxford Street. Vehicles from Lokko Street will use Ajumaku Street and Oxford Street.
Drivers from the High Street towards Black Star Square will be diverted through Liberia Road to the National Theatre, while traffic from AU Circle to Castle Road will be rerouted through Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads to connect to Abdul Nasser Road near GIJ.
Parking arrangements
Only vehicles with VVIP entry stickers will be permitted into Black Star Square. Approved parking locations include the State House forecourt, Accra International Conference Centre, Osu Cemetery, Accra Sports Stadium, Ministries area, Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Access Bank car park, Marine Drive Park, and Afua Sutherland Park.
The Police cautioned that vehicles parked at unauthorized spots will be towed. Security officers will be deployed to assist motorists and guide dignitaries to designated car parks.
The August 6 crash in Adansi Akrufuom claimed eight lives: Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Alhaji Dr. Murtala Mohammed, Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Mr. Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flight Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
While two were buried earlier according to Islamic rites, the remaining six will be laid to rest on Friday with full military honours.
