As part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s Health sector, Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has officially sworn in new board members of four key health institutions in the country.
The Institutions include the Pharmacy Council, the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives, Medical and Dental Council and the National Health Insurance Authority.

The new instituted board members are expected to play vital roles in addressing the challenges facing the health sector, such non-communicable diseases, workforce attrition and the demand for quality healthcare.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Akandoh emphasized the government’s commitment to rolling out the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares) and indicated each agency’s role in supporting this initiative.

He urged the Medical and Dental Council to ensure the ethics of the profession and competent care are adhered to across all regions, and called on the NHIA to align its benefit packages with national priorities, especially in financing care for chronic diseases.
The Pharmacy Council on the other hand, was tasked with improving medicine distribution, eradicating opioids, and strengthening pharmaceutical regulation with support from the private sector.

The Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives was also urged to lead workforce reform and help curb health worker migration by enhancing training and professional development.
Mr. Akandoh encouraged all the board members to work together and prioritize the needs of Ghanaian patients, saying “irrespective of whatever we will do, the ultimate goal is the common Ghanaian”.
