The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed the University of Ghana to reverse the recent 25% increase in academic fees for the 2025/2026 academic year, as well as any newly introduced charges.
In a letter dated January 5, 2026, to the Vice Chancellor, GTEC noted that its previous directive of November 3, 2025, explicitly stated that publicly funded tertiary institutions should “not implement any fee increases for the 2025/2026 academic year.”
Despite this, the Commission was made aware that the University of Ghana had raised fees without prior approval.
The Commission has requested the university to:
- Immediately reverse all fee increases and dues.
- Credit continuing students who overpaid toward next year’s fees.
- Refund final-year students who paid more than last year’s fees.
- Revert all other dues, including SRC and GRASSAG charges, to the previous academic year’s rates.
- Suspend any newly introduced fees, such as the 75th Anniversary dues and Development Levy, unless previously approved.
GTEC has given the University of Ghana a deadline of January 12, 2026, to provide evidence of compliance, warning that failure to do so will result in “serious regulatory sanctions.”
