Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has announced that a new legal education reform bill will be submitted to Cabinet before the end of September 2025.
The bill seeks to expand access to legal education, abolish the Ghana School of Law’s monopoly, and reduce the training duration for lawyers from five to four years.
Under the proposed reforms, accredited universities will run a one-year law practice course covering civil procedure, criminal procedure, advocacy, legal ethics, and evidence, after which students will sit for a national bar examination.
Dr. Ayine explained that the Ghana School of Law will serve as a transitional institution until 2027, when current students complete their studies.
Afterward, the school will adopt the new syllabus to align with the reformed system.
He stressed that the reforms reflect government’s commitment to fairness, inclusivity, and modernization of Ghana’s legal education system.
