Government has signed a \$30 million deal with the government of China to construct a modern market in Aflao, fulfilling a campaign promise made by President John Dramani Mahama during the 2024 election season.
This was disclosed by Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a Facebook post on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
According to Mr. Ablakwa, the funds were secured under the express instructions of President Mahama.

The grant will finance the construction of a state-of-the-art market in Aflao, aimed at boosting economic activity in the region and strengthening trade links between Ho and Lomé.
Mr. Ablakwa noted that a similar grant from China was used to build the Kotokuraba Market in Cape Coast during the Mills-Mahama administration.
The signing ceremony for the agreement took place on July 7, 2025, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He said, “Ghana secures $30million grant from China. Mr. Ablakwa signed on behalf of the Government of Ghana, while the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, signed on behalf of the Chinese government.
He emphasized that the new Aflao market will serve as a major hub for cross-border trade in West Africa, improve livelihoods, and create economic opportunities for thousands.
