Government has saved approximately GH¢13.03 billion following a 62.9 per cent decline in financial irregularities recorded across five audited sectors between 2024 and 2025.

The reduction brings the value of financial irregularities from about GH¢20.72 billion in 2024 to GH¢7.69 billion in 2025, exceeding the government’s target of reducing such irregularities by 50 per cent.

This was revealed by Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, during an engagement on the 2025 Auditor-General’s Reports with Chief Directors, Chief Executive Officers and Heads of Covered Entities.

According to him, the figures reflect progress in government’s efforts to improve public financial management and strengthen accountability across public institutions.

“I am pleased to report that, taken together, financial irregularities across these five sectors declined from approximately GH¢20.72 billion in 2024 to GH¢7.69 billion in 2025,” he said.

“This represents a reduction of approximately GH¢13.03 billion, or 62.9 per cent. This is a significant achievement.”

Mr. Ampem said the reduction surpassed the government’s 50 per cent target by 12.9 percentage points.

He attributed the improvement to deliberate measures aimed at tightening internal controls, improving financial management and ensuring greater accountability.

“This improvement demonstrates that when there is deliberate attention to public financial management, stronger controls and greater accountability, measurable results can be achieved,” he stated.

The engagement also examined findings contained in the 2025 Auditor-General’s Reports, with public institution heads urged to address identified weaknesses, strengthen compliance and prevent the recurrence of financial irregularities.

The development forms part of broader efforts to improve the management of public funds and ensure that financial lapses identified through audits are addressed.
