Government has entered advanced negotiations with a potential strategic investor to overhaul operations at AT—formerly AirtelTigo—in a bid to revitalise the state-owned telecom company and boost competitiveness in the telecommunications sector.
This was disclosed by the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, during a stakeholder engagement with telecom industry CEOs on Friday, May 30, 2025.
Speaking at the event, the Minister revealed that the government is committed to securing significant investment to improve AT’s infrastructure and services.
According to him, the ongoing discussions are expected to conclude within a 60-day window, paving the way for a complete rollout of enhanced services by the end of the third quarter of 2025.
The move, he says signals a major shift in the government’s strategy for AT, aimed at injecting much-needed capital and expertise into the operator.
Mr. George noted, “It is good to hear CAPEX requirements that are coming in. As Minister, I hold in trust for the Ghanaian people. Maybe for the first time, I will put out that the government is currently in negotiations with a strategic partner to revamp and take over AT.”
“We started these conversations. We have given a 60-day window for the completion of those negotiations so that by the end of Q3, we could see a full roll out of the improved services from AT,” Sam George said.
