Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has hinted at ongoing discussions with traditional leaders in Akwatia on the possibility of establishing a satellite campus of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in the Eastern Region.
Speaking during a courtesy call on the Oseawuohene, Daasebre Dr. Asumadu Appiah, Mr. Debrah said the Presidency will soon convene a stakeholder meeting at the Jubilee House to explore the feasibility of converting part of the defunct Great Consolidated Diamond Company (GCD) facilities into a training hub for sustainable mining.
The proposal, originally tabled by the Oseawuo Division of Akyem Abuakwa, seeks to equip young people with modern mining skills while creating jobs for the local economy.
“This has been a long-standing demand from the chiefs, and it is receiving serious consideration at the highest levels,” the Chief of Staff assured.
The visit also served as a platform to introduce the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo Esq., ahead of the September 2 by-election.
Mr. Debrah urged traditional leaders to support the government’s development agenda in Akwatia.
The Oseawuohene welcomed the initiative but called for urgent rehabilitation of roads in Wenchi and the Denkyembuor District. He further appealed to political parties and security agencies to ensure a peaceful by-election, noting Akwatia’s past reputation for electoral tension.
Political Advisor at the Office of the Vice President, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, rallied support for Mr. Baidoo, stressing that the ruling party’s parliamentary candidate has the leverage to attract development projects.
He also urged supporters of former aspirants Henry Boakye Yiadom and Erasmus Ali Koney to unite, revealing that President Mahama has earmarked both men for appointments in other capacities.
Other government officials present included Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, Youth Development Minister and NDC National Youth Organizer George Opare Addo, Ghana’s Ambassador to the US Victor Smith, Council of State member Evelyn Korang, and Legal Advisor to the President, Marietta Brew Appiah Oppong.
