The Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced the complete settlement of all National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) claims arrears amounting to GH¢603 million as of December 2024.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Friday, July 18, 2025, Mr. Akandoh described the clearance of the debt as a clear sign of the government’s commitment to rebuilding trust in the health sector.
In addition to clearing the arrears, the Minister revealed that the NHIA had disbursed over GH¢1.38 billion to health service providers across the country within the first half of 2025 alone.
He attributed this financial turnaround to bold reforms, including the uncapping of the National Health Insurance Levy, which has significantly boosted revenue inflows into the scheme.
According to the Minister, the increased cash flow is helping to strengthen healthcare delivery systems and reflects a more efficient and responsive NHIS under the Mahama administration.
“In the first half of 2025 alone, the NHIA disbursed over GHS 1.38 billion to providers, reflecting a system that is stronger, more responsive, and more reliable than ever before. This turnaround demonstrates that we are developing a health insurance scheme that benefits all Ghanaians,” Akandoh added.
