Health Minister Mintah Akandoh has announced that free primary health care will be implemented in 2026 as part of the government’s commitment to improving access to quality health services.
Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, December 1, the Minister outlined that the initiative will focus on preventive, promotive, and curative health services.
He said, “His Excellency the President has directed that beginning next year, we have to roll out what we call free primary health care. We’ll be looking, in addition to the curative, we’ll be looking at enhanced promotive health care, we’ll be looking at enhanced preventive health care, and that will give rise to the early detection of the diseases, not even get to the complication stage.”
Mr. Akandoh confirmed that the programme has been allocated 1.5 billion Ghana cedis in the 2026 budget and will operate under the framework of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The Minister emphasized that this move is intended to strengthen Ghana’s health system, reduce the burden of preventable diseases, and ensure early detection of illnesses before they escalate to severe complications.
