The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has addressed a viral video circulating on social media that allegedly shows fire service personnel assaulting a civilian, saying the incident is currently under police investigation.
In a statement on Monday, January 5, 2026, the Service said it has taken note of the video, which appears to capture an altercation involving firefighters at a recent fire scene.
GNFS confirmed that the alleged assault of a journalist referenced in the footage is being investigated by the Police, adding that the Service will “fully cooperate to establish the facts.”
According to GNFS, the video shows a confrontation between firefighters and “a suspected thief, who had earlier attacked firefighters along with a group of accomplices” during operations at the fire scene.
Management of the Service has also set up an internal committee to investigate the incident and establish all relevant facts. While condemning attacks on its personnel, GNFS stressed that it does not condone misconduct by its officers.
The Service stated that it “equally frowns upon any form of physical or verbal assault on civilians by its personnel, regardless of the level of provocation.”
GNFS has urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue and reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and transparency. Further updates, it said, will be communicated as the investigations progress.
