A coalition of nearly 400 individuals and organisations has demanded the cancellation of the Israeli Film Festival scheduled for September 16–20, 2025, at Silverbird Cinema in Accra Mall.
In a statement issued on September 15, the group described the event as “Zionist propaganda” meant to whitewash Israel’s image amid what they called an ongoing genocide in Gaza. They argued that hosting the festival in Ghana contradicts the nation’s anti-imperialist legacy and solidarity with oppressed peoples.
The coalition highlighted reports of mass civilian deaths in Gaza and warned that institutions supporting the festival, including sponsors such as Kempinski Hotel and UniMac, would face boycotts.
They expressed particular outrage at UniMac, a publicly funded university, for aligning with what they described as apartheid propaganda.
Prominent signatories include journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr., filmmaker Nii Kwate Owoo, former CHRAJ boss Emile Short, academics Akosua Adomako Ampofo and Audrey Gadzekpo, and activist Wanlov Kubolor.
More than 30 civic groups, including the Economic Fighters League, Socialist Movement of Ghana, and Palestine Solidarity Committee, have also declared support.
The coalition announced plans to picket outside Silverbird throughout the festival, urging Ghanaians to boycott sponsors and amplify solidarity with Palestine.
“Ghana has always stood on the side of the oppressed. Today we must stand with Palestine. Cancel this festival. Withdraw your sponsorship. The people are watching. History will judge,” the statement concluded.
