Government has announced the resumption of its evacuation exercise for Ghanaians affected by renewed xenophobic attacks in South Africa, with about 1,000 citizens expected to be brought home in phases.
This was announced in a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs dated Saturday, July 25 2026.
According to the Ministry, the first batch of evacuees is scheduled to arrive in Accra on Sunday, July 26, and Monday, July 27, 2026. The exercise will initially cover Ghanaians who have already registered with the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria to return home voluntarily with government support.
The Ministry said priority will be given to vulnerable groups, including women, children, the elderly, students and persons with medical conditions. It also urged Ghanaians in distress to contact the High Commission for assistance with travel arrangements.
The government expressed gratitude to the Ghanaian leadership of the Church of Pentecost in Pretoria and Johannesburg, as well as Global Kingdom Investment Pty. Ltd., for providing temporary shelter to displaced Ghanaians at no cost while evacuation arrangements were being made.
“The Government of Ghana and our High Commission in Pretoria remains alert and has reactivated its emergency consular response as we stand ready to assist all Ghanaians living in South Africa to return home safely,” the statement said.
The Ministry further appealed to Ghanaians still in South Africa to remain calm, stay away from areas affected by unrest, avoid confrontations and cooperate with officials of the Ghana High Commission to ensure a smooth evacuation process.
