Ghana has officially set aside every Wednesday as a national day for wearing Fugu, also known as Batakari, as part of efforts to promote Ghanaian culture and traditional fashion.
The declaration was made by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, which said the move is aimed at strengthening cultural identity while also supporting local weavers, tailors, and the broader textile value chain.
The announcement comes shortly after a social media controversy in Zambia, where a Zambian Member of Parliament described President John Dramani Mahama’s outfit as a “blouse,” triggering backlash from many Ghanaians who defended the traditional attire and called for more respect for Ghanaian culture.
The Ministry says the Wednesday Fugu Day is expected to become a symbol of national pride and a consistent reminder of Ghana’s rich cultural heritage.
